Public Utilities Laboratory Technician   

Under guidance of the Superintendent of Public Utilities and the Water and Wastewater Supervisors, works to test and ensure quality of Public Utilities system operations through routine lab testing and compliance with the Department of Environmental Quality Standards. Also works to ensure compliance with Township standards and specifications while continuously improving operations. Works to support Public Utilities Operators and assists with other project-based work upon request. Grade A6.  

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Perform daily lab tests
  2. Check performances and do maintenance on lab electronic equipment and probes
  3. Prepare chemicals for use in tests
  4. Maintain testing clarifiers and bio-discs
  5. Maintain chlorine use
  6. Monitor test results and report possible problems to supervisor
  7. Maintain a QA-QC program as required by the Department of Environmental Quality
  8. Perform lab tests for Leprino Foods, monitor results and report any violation to Leprino Foods
  9. Maintain inventory of lab supplies
  10. Answer telephones, deliver messages, etc.
  11. Continuous improvement of lab processes through involvement in trade groups

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  1. Previous public utilities experience and/or training is desired but not required
  2. Basic writing skills, knowledge of spelling punctuation and grammar
  3. Skill in performing routing operations and ability to remain alert and aware of surroundings in order to quickly identify problems
  4. Logic, intuition, limited analysis, research, organization, problem solving, and judgement skills
  5. Ability to meet deadlines
  6. Ability to explain and train colleagues on new procedures
  7. Ability to respond to questions from colleagues and the public and to provide analysis and recommendations
  8. Ability to comprehend and perform job-specific math
  9. Ability to operate a computer and learn job-specific programs 

 

Ability Requirements:

  1. Ability to operate/drive equipment necessary to collect samples
  2. Ability to stand for a major portion of the workday
  3. Ability to work independently
  4. Ability to lift up to 50lbs without assistance
  5. Ability to drive, with a valid driver’s license
  6. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Education Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree with focus on Chemistry or related field required
  2. Encouraged to obtain lab certification (not required)
